Shakespeare Fact or Fiction: A Playwright and His Shrew (d) Play

This talk is in two parts. The first is about Shakespeare: The Man in which Dr. Abate will address certain myths that persist about him today (he didn't write his own plays, he didn't love his wife because he left her the "second best bed" in his will, and so on). Then the second part of the talk takes those myths, those misreadings, and applies them to what she believes is one of his most misunderstood plays, The Taming of the Shrew. It's a complicated love story, but a love story nevertheless, and she will re-frame the main character Katherine as a much less victimized and much more empowered female character than is often considered.

Presented by Dr. Corey Abate
